LUCI: Judging Smart

Smart technology makes today’s world go ‘round…but what does “smart” even mean anymore? As we developed LUCI, we wanted to make sure the idea of “smart” technology truly lives up to its name.

That’s why LUCI Chief Technology Officer Jered Dean wrote Judging Smart, a comprehensive guide that offers initial ideas and questions around the concept of smart technology in power mobility. Within Judging Smart, we noted a number of questions and promised to answer them. Below, please find both our queries and their answers.

Automation & Assistance

LUCI is designed to automatically, smoothly slow a power wheelchair to a stop before colliding with things or driving off steps or curbs. LUCI offers Mobility Level 2 (partial automation) which, we believe, offers the most appropriate combination of user control and technical assistance – the best solution for most riders in most situations.

Battery Performance

LUCI plugs directly into power wheelchairs, so you don’t have to remember to charge yet another device.

LUCI uses less than 5 percent of your battery.

As a bonus, you can have LUCI remind you to charge your wheelchair battery when it gets low, and you can use the MyLUCI dashboard to monitor your battery usage and plan a charging schedule.

Software Updates

LUCI uses Wi-Fi to receive secure over-the-air updates and install these updates automatically overnight while your chair is off.

We use an advanced update process so that if there are any problems or interruptions during an update, LUCI will simply roll back to the last suitable software update. LUCI’s software will keep getting better over time thanks to ongoing software updates.

Rider Control

First, if you ever disagree with LUCI, you win. Pressing the LUCI button on the dashboard turns LUCI off for 20 seconds or until you push the LUCI button again.

And, because the rider should always be in control, if at any time or for any reason you want to, you can disable LUCI or any of its features manually using the setup tool.

No Limitations

We’re proud to say that LUCI will not limit your ability to transfer in or out of the wheelchair or limit any of the seating functions on your power wheelchair.

Use in Various Environments

LUCI works in the home, indoors or outdoors, day or night. Because that’s where you need it to work. LUCI is IP5X water resistant and, thanks to our FusionSensors, LUCI can see both in the dark and in full daylight.

Seeing drop-offs in the built environment is easier for LUCI than when you are “off-roading”. So, driving on natural surfaces, like a grassy field or gravel path, may lead LUCI to slow you down.

Product Safety

LUCI is a registered FDA Class I, exempt medical device and meets the associated requirements of the FDA and FCC.

LUCI meets all applicable requirements for Medical Electrical Equipment per IEC 60601, as well as all applicable requirements of the ISO 7176 Wheelchairs standard.

FCC compliance, as well as electrical immunity and emissions requirements for the home use of medical electrical devices, have all been independently verified by Intertek.

Sharing Data

LUCI users can invite team members to access their data using the MyLUCI app. Each user is in control of who can see their data and which data streams (location, driving, battery, and/or health data) they want to share with each team member.

Data-Based Actions

Because life is a team sport, MyLUCI is designed to connect you to your team and share data and alerts. Text, push, or email alerts can be setup to automatically send to you or your team members when your battery is low, if your chair tips over, if your heart rate spikes and much more.

In addition, the information in MyLUCI is designed to be viewed over time to help you make informed decisions. For example, MyLUCI puts your average battery usage per day and mileage per day into infographics so that you can better manage your battery and charging schedule.

Data Security

We take data security very seriously. Some of the security steps we’ve taken include:

No personally identifiable information is stored on LUCI units locally. All information is de-identified.
The MyLUCI portal is HIPAA-secure and kept up-to-date by our team.
Even though day-to-day communications between LUCI and the cloud don’t include personally identifiable information, we transmit de-identified and encrypted data via a secure connection to MyLUCI.
Your LUCI unit will not send data to MyLUCI unless your personal wheelchair key is present.

Data Access

Each LUCI user controls access to their personally identified data through the MyLUCI app available on iOS, Android or via MyLUCI.com.

In the unlikely event of a malfunction, LUCI is designed with multiple built-in self-test protocols that can automatically detect, and in many cases automatically correct, malfunctions. If the system cannot autocorrect the problem, LUCI will automatically disable itself so that your chair continues to drive but without LUCI, until someone can service your unit.

And, because the rider should always be in control, if at any time or for any reason you want to, you can disable LUCI or any of its features manually using the setup tool.

Device Data

LUCI users have access to their device data using the MyLUCI app. The app is available on iOS, Android, or via MyLUCI.com.

Platform Compatibility

MyLUCI works with the digital health devices you use every day by being compatible with Apple Health and Google Fit.

Connected Tech

LUCI’s core functions of collision avoidance, drop-off protection, and tip protection work independent of the cloud. This means LUCI isn’t affected by MyLUCI updates or outages if they were to occur.

LUCI is a connected device for two main reasons:

To provide you with the information you need to make smart decisions and keep you connected to your team.
To keep your device up to date with new features and the latest security updates.

LUCI primarily uses Wi-Fi to connect to the outside world but can use its cellular connection to send alerts when it is off of Wi-Fi. In addition, LUCI has Bluetooth (classic and BLE) onboard.

Connecting to LUCI

LUCI is equipped with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and USB capabilities.

API Availability

Not today, but APIs could become available for LUCI in the future.

Interconnectivity

LUCI works with Alexa and Google Assistant. To connect LUCI to either of these platforms, visit luci.com/alexa or luci.com/google

Long Term Security

We’ve used security best practices to develop our onboarding and cloud software. But, in the event we’ve missed something, we have built secure over-the-air update capabilities in to LUCI so that we can push security patches if needed.

Driver Data

LUCI collects data on usage and performance to help improve the products we make, and also to develop new products.

We may de-identify your personal information and aggregate de-identified data to improve our products and services. We may also share this de-identified information with third parties for research purposes, with the intent of driving progress for wheelchair riders.
